Sixteen residues and a disulfide loop

The 176–191 fragment of human growth hormone with a tyrosine added at the N-terminus. The two cysteine residues form a disulfide bridge that closes a loop within the molecule.

Two daltons of difference

Formed or not formed

Closing a disulfide bond removes two hydrogen atoms. Correctly folded AOD-9604 is therefore two daltons lighter than the same chain with its cysteines still free.

Two daltons in 1815 is roughly one part in a thousand. It is also the difference between the intended three-dimensional structure and a floppy chain with the right composition.

Not the same as hGH

AOD-9604 is sixteen residues of a 191-residue hormone. It is sometimes marketed with language borrowed from growth hormone itself, which is a claim about a different molecule roughly twelve times the size.

Fragment boundaries drift

As with TB-500, suppliers do not always use identical fragment boundaries, and the added N-terminal tyrosine is sometimes omitted. Each variation shifts the mass in a way that identification by name cannot capture.

  2. Purity — measured at the quantifying transition, with the method named on the report.
